DAY 9 PEOPLE WATCHING ON BOARD

We’ve been meeting some interesting people. For example, there’s Senor Vasco from Spain. He’s in his mid-eighties, a bit unsteady on his feet, and always wears the same outfit -- brown and orange plaid trousers with matching plaid newsboy cap, white collared shirt and tie and green pullover sweater. He’s quite the courtly gentleman and very sociable, apparently traveling alone. We see him all over the ship, introducing himself and talking with people. Although we have talked with him several times, he does not appear to remember. I think he spends most of his days walking around.

Then there’s the English lady, small and sparrow-like, who sat next to my sister at the ice show (which was entertaining) and who talked nonstop. She could, and would, talk about anything. Although she was charming and sweet, I must confess that engaging in nonstop conversation like that is a bit tiring.

We met a fascinating woman who is traveling by herself. For many years she worked for a well-known international news organization then retired and now works in a high-stress environment for the US Government. She says she takes one “vegetable trip” (like a cruise) each year and one adventure trip. We are looking forward to swapping travel stories with her. Meanwhile, she has so many stories to tell about conflict areas and disasters that she has experienced in her career that it is hard not to just hang on her every word.
